I'm in love with mini macaws! My favourites are Hahn's and Illiger's but I don't own any so I figured I'd ask here.

I have had 1 past illigers and currently have an illigers, yellow collared and hahns. I have met some great severes, I love the red they have on them, so beautiful. They do seem a little different then the other mini macaes to me. Calmer maybe. And a bit more like large macaws, where red fronts felt a bit like a large mini macaw. Well, that was just the few birds I met, but that is what I thought. I would have loved to have a severe.
Blue headed macaws are so beautiful too and pretty similar too yc and illigers in behaviour. Looks wise it is hard to choose a favorite, they are all beautiful. I think for me it would be severes and yellow collareds regarding looks.

Mine are all excitable little ones, even Jace(cage bound in a shed for many years), altough a bit less. Enough fire in them, smart, on one hand not afraid quickly(well Jace is but the other 3 are brave), on the other hand prone to nervous breakdowns if they don't understand the situation and susceptable to stress. Can be very active. Very emotional, but very easy to read body language. Prone to one person issues, all of them have chosen one person or bird to protect and can be agressive. Not the most touchable species, and they have many opninions, I think a bit like some amazons. They give me loads of headaches, but I love them:laugh:

If I had to pick between Hahn's and Illigers, I'd probably go with the Illiger's; but just as a warning, all minis get spicy at age 4 or 5, and nips are nearly a given. Both of my Illiger's are territorial.

Not sure if there are any species that aren’t spicy haha! Or macaws that aren’t nippy. What makes you prefer Illiger’s to Hahn’s, if I may ask?

Welcome to the community!

I have limited experience with other minis, but I love my (barely mini) Severe.

Larger macaws are less nippy than minis. I prefer Illiger's because I find them more beautiful, but it's really a tossup.
