Possibly consider contacting Jason Crane (out of IL) or try Dr. Scott McDonald or Dr. Sakas - also out of IL but some of them may have contacts or info that might help. Crane works with zoos and may be able to give some input, Dr. Scott travels around the world nd Dr. Sakas might have connections or info.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained but I really, really hope and pray that this works out for you.

This is horrifying, I’m so sorry this is happening!
I hope you get helpful info through the zoos or some of the links posted.
This poor bird has already been through so much, to finally find a loving forever home and may lose that due to technicalities!?! It’s an outrage. We should be going out of our way to accommodate our military families being transferred overseas- and pets ARE their family! I understand they have laws in place for endangered species but I’ll say it again, this is an outrage!

If you cannot get this decision changed reach out to the news, politicians,WHOEVER will listen!

CITES rules are very strict to begin with. We brought our macaws from Canada to the UK back in 2015.
The laws are always changing and it's getting harder now with so many being classed as endangered species.
I wish I could offer you a solution, but as other members have stated, it's very hard.
Good luck and I hope you can find some sort of loophole.

He would only qualify for the pre-act if I had possession of him as well prior to it. Even though he was born before it, I adopted him after the act so we don't qualify.

I actually found it on Amazon. I hot glued the pegs in place that hold the rings. If i left him unsupervised with it he'd destroy it lol
It's a shame it isn't tied to when the bird was born, which would make more sense.

My military would pitch it then chase after the pieces screaming like a little kid.

I believe there are rescues that might 'board' him until you return. IMO, taking him, even if able is a huge risk.

A well established rescue is IMO the best bet. Friends just would not be prepared for life with a macaw, and 2 years is asking a lot.

I feel for you.

Zoos usually import and export animals for breeding purposes, which is covered by CITES. It's worth contacting them to check but try not to get your hopes up about whether they'll be able to help.

Just to clarify, I'm the Operations Manager for the parrot rescue where I adopted him. I know they will take him into the rescue, but please understand that is my LAST resort. I love him, his grumpy butt loves me. We have a routine, we're family. I know he would be taken care of at the rescue by great people, but I also know he wouldn't be able to roam freely like he does at home, I know he wouldn't let anyone socialize with him and I know when the public visits on the weekend it would stress him out. He's just a grumpy old guy. He gets over stimulated when family comes to visit. When he was in the rescue before he hated when people would try to pet him and mess with him, and that would be a continuous thing every weekend for 2 years. If I have to do that I will, but I want to exhaust all other avenues first. I contacted the specialist handling my case at US Fish and Wildlife. I flat out asked him about the conservation outreach education I wanted to do with him and he said that wouldn't qualify. Basically the only thing they can approve according to ESA law is scientific research. Which I just don't have the qualifications to provide. I asked what was I to do with my bird? If the ESA want's to protect the species what was I going to do with the bird in question that is a part of the protected species. He said ma'am, I strongly urge you to write your letter of reconsideration to our office. It will go to a higher authority within US Fish and Wildlife, it will probably get denied again but then you will be given another 45 days to write another letter of reconsideration. Then it will go to a higher authority, to a more political level who has more flexibility above them. He kept saying he "urged" me to do that. So I'm hoping I'll be successful telling our situation to someone higher up. Fingers crossed!
PS... I did write the President at the White House as well, no response yet

Let me ask you this...
When I was in a joint spouse assignment was 2 yrs a single accompanied was 1. (Spouse and kids stay home) now I did my time being gone and while hard it was best for the kids and we got the reunion half way thru.
There usually was no acceptance of exotic animals on osan or kunsan.
Is there any help for the bird to be at home state with the spouse rather than being at a rescue?

Countries are very strict especially a place like Korea. Omg I would be happy to take care of him while you are over there, I have a Galah and a lovebird, not a Macaw, but he's beautiful! But, definitely try the service pet idea! Service pets can be for any reason, and you might need the emotional support!
My Galah roams freely while we are home too.

Fingers and toes crossed here! It’s obvious how much you love him and I really hope this gets to somebody who will finally be able to help you! You’re doing everything you can and that’s all you can do- I pray you get to stay together
Since the man you spoke with did mention the “higher ups” are on a more political level, could you reach out to local authorities?
Keep doing what you’re doing and hopefully it reaches the right people. This really is a nightmare for you and your baby. I’m so sorry!

I’m almost sure that the answer was no. They can’t bring the bird. It’s the military lifestyle. (Sacrifice the luxuries)

I’ve been afraid that they would be able to get him out of the US but not back in.

Back in is easy, because then it’s just a pet and documents show he went there so coming back is easy. Korea is usually a singles one year location, sporadically crazy people will want to do 2 yrs with their dependents but nooooo thanks.

My first duty station was in Korea. I was stationed at Camp Kyle. Just north of CRC. I loved Korea but I WOULD never want to do a two year rotation.
