hi all. I started volunteering at a small bird rescue in my area. I was told the reason there wasn’t a microwave oven in the bird building was because it causes neurological disorders in birds. I have a flock of 4 rescues at home, and naturally started looking into this. I’m having trouble finding anything specific to microwave ovens, however, and was hoping someone on this forum might be able to direct or educate me if anyone is familiar with this subject. Thank you in advance!

It doesn’t make sense to me at all - microwave ovens are encased for our protection and leaks are rare from what I understand

I don't see how it could damage their brains , unless they were put inside of the microwave. Our appliances emit electro magnetic frequency. That's why all the dust and stuff collects under them. Some study's have been done on the potential to cause neurologic damage in humans so far has been inconclusive .Anything has the potential to be bad for us and animals, but we can't go around living in fear of what if's. Sometimes we have the tendency to over-think what's best for our Avian Companion's. :)
People with pace- makers need to be cautious about getting to close to microwaves, it messes with the rhythm pace of the device. Although that was with the older microwaves when they first came on to market, don't quote me on the newer pace-makers /microwaves.

Are you sure it was from the radiation, or for what it does to food?

Well since water robs vegetables of their nutrition, the fact that you can use little water and a shorter cook time means it has actually been found in some studies that microwaves preserve more nutrients than boiling on the stove does.

Thank you all for your comments, I will have to ask where she got her information when I go out there to pick up the microwave oven I donated

When I just did a quick Google search I did find comments about micro/convection ovens that might have a kind of a easy clean coating on the inside that could be unhealthy.

Been using one for years and have had birds and microwaves in the same house. Never an issue here.
