Our feathered friend, a 25 year old cockatiel, had been vomiting some dry seeds while eating lately. We went to an avian vet last week who initially prescribed 7 days of Ronivet-S (6% ronidazole) to mix in water after test results came back positive for trichamoniasis. It seems like he hasn't been drinking enough water to get a large enough dose though and while the symptoms have improved, they haven't completely been resolved after a week.
Now the vet prescribed some metronidazole formula to give orally via syringe instead so our cockatiel can get a more exact dose of medicine. The concentration is 50mg/ML and we need to give him .08 mL daily for 7 days.
Does anyone have any experience giving metronidazole before to their cockatiel and does this seem like an OK concentration/dosage based on your experience? Our previous avian vet, who is currently unavailable, had prescribed a 20mg/ML solution of metronidazole, .2 ml daily for a previous bout of trich. I've read about potential neurological effects from this med and was worried that the 50mg/ml concentration might be too high, and this is something the previous vet mentioned when explaining why he gave a more diluted formula (although he might have just been taking a precaution because of our cockatiel's age). Also, would it be better to give .04 mL twice a day rather than the .08 mL at once?
