You can look in the spots in the screen shot below to find different things. The Envelope is for private messages that is like forum email in a way and you have to post so many times before you can use that feature. The lightning bolt shows new posts and the Bell will show any notifications on content you have interacted with. So if some one responds to a post you make it will show up under the bell.
