I need help finding a good bowl for my greenwing’s playstand. She gets her veggies there every day. Unfortunately she has managed to find a way to dump every bowl I attach including the “locking” crocks. She has plenty of other toys and activities on the stand but is obsessed with unscrewing anything she can…lol. Any ideas on a bowl she won’t be able to detach or dump are appreciated.

Is she doing it from below? Can you put a platform perch etc underneath to block her access?

Are you mechanically inclined like the bird?

If the bowl is stainless in a metal loop, drill a hole on each side just under the loop, and put a stainless screw and nut (get a wing nut you can do it by hand, but if necessary to keep the bird from learning a regular nut and you use a tool). It will take a minute to remove the bowel, but it's unlikely the bard can do anything with it. $1-2 max.

she is a master at removing wing nuts, quicklinks, etc…..it’s a challenge for sure….lol. She has even removed lock nuts though they do slow her down slightly…

Tiny lock and you keep the key hidden. I'd suggest combination but something tells me you'll find she can guess the number. :shocking:

If they can do it up then the bird can undo it. They need to be block3d off from getting to the screw part.

I literally gave up, we have been through every lock and twist type bowl there is available here and Burt can get them all out or just breaks them.

The closest I can get to keeping bowls where they belong is to alter the metal rings (alter the diameter of the ring) the bowls sit in so it is just too hard for the bird to pop them out- this also means it is quite the struggle for me to remove the bowls and the rings need regular altering to keep them that tight. We have ended up with a few busted rings when someone is totally invested in getting the bowl out so I’m again on the hunt for old cages to pinch the rings from.

OK, like most engineers (or some say men in general) I can't help keep trying to "fix"....

If it's a ring up against a dowel or anything similar, is there room slightly under the ring to drill all the way through the bowel and dowel? On the bowel side drill a hole for a bolt (more in a sec on that). On the other side drill a larger hole 1/4" or so deep (depth of a nut) and wide enough for a socket wrench head to wrap around the nut.

Ideally on the bowel side if you can do it, make the whole rectangular (e.g. with a punch or something) so it fits a carriage bolt like the below. The rectangular part needs to fit into the hole in the bowel to keep it from turning when tightened. If you drill the size of the short part edge, you can then cut the corners in with a triangular file or a punch on a vice or something to fit the corners. Doesn't have to be perfect, just a bit too small and then tighten hard to pull into shape.

On the reverse side put a nut on an tighten with a socket so the nut goes inside the dowel to keep the beak away. This carriage bolt and nut do not have to be particularly large since it's not carrying weight, it's just keeping the bowel from being lifted out, while hiding the nut in the dowel, and hiding the head behind a smooth curve.

The only risk I see in this setup is if they chew up the dowel to get to the nut. If she starts eating the dowel to get to it, consider replacing it with metal, or putting a metal pipe over it (inner diameter slightly larger than the dowel) and drill through it. Another possibility if you know someone with a welder is an L shaped piece of stainless or aluminum, carriage bolt through the bowel again, and on the back side weld a little box around the nut to keep it from being accessed except with the socket.

Don't let the bird win!! Do this for humanity, do not demote us to dumber than the bird!
