Avenue Spotlight Award
Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am so delighted to announce fluffypoptarts as May's Mayor of the Avenue.
I loved your interview and enjoyed getting to know you a little better!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
My birds are all peach-faced lovebirds: Twinkie (4 yrs), Termite (8 yrs), Beni (10 yrs), Turnip (2 yrs), Snerky (approx. 4 years), Neutrino (1 yr/unknown).
2. What got you interested in birds?
Apparently I've had an affinity for birds since I was very young. I'm told one of the first things I could say was, "Fweet-fweet!" My mother says I'd get wildly excited whenever I saw birds or even heard them mentioned.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
Love, laughter, joy, tenderness, and purpose.
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
That birds tend to understand love and loyalty better than people do! Feed and groom your loved ones, speak to them often, cuddle them, share your feelings, and forgive missteps whenever possible!
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
A lot of them will! But if I have to name just one, I guess it would be meeting baby Termite. I never knew just how wonderful lovebirds were until he came into my life.
6. Where is your birds main living area?
Twinkie, Termite, and Beni are in front of the sliding glass doors in the living room, and Turnip is in the dining room (he can still see and talk to the others). My girls (Neut and Snerky) are in the bedroom to either side of the window.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
Yes. I've gotten rid of furniture to give them more space/to make space for them, switched to stainless cookware as well as making sure I had a safe toaster oven and rice maker, and stopped using candles/oils/incense. Using a vinegar and lemon mix to clean most areas. I also refuse to let pest control into my apartment because I don't trust them around my birds. I try to be there whenever work is done so that the birds aren't distressed.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
No, though I may attend our local exotic bird club meeting soon.
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
It's not a luxury "item", per se, but I'd love to be able to set up a bird room for them someday. Oh and stainless steel cages.
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
Not a different species, but a mutation - I'd love to have a Dutch blue lovie someday, simply because I think the mutation is so beautiful.
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
If I dare to sleep in, Termite starts his staccato barking to indicate irritation and impatience. He can be heard quite well from the bedroom. This is on top of the usual wake-up calls that I get from Snerky who will make a variety of noises to try to entice me to get up. If I take too long puttering around in the kitchen and have already uncovered the birds, Twinkie and Termite will start yelling at me in concert until I attend them. Everyone gets extra snuggle time broken up throughout the day when I'm home.
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
That being owned by such beautiful, complex creatures is one of the best things in life! It is a privilege to be loved by them.
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
I would have provided larger cages and a better diet.
14. What other hobbies do you have?
I watch anime, play video games, read, listen to music, follow my favorite Vocaloid composers, and used to garden when I had a place to plant things!
15. Anything else you would like to share?
I love the people and birdies on AA!
