Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am happy to announce that Greencheek Lee is March's Mayor of the Month.
I enjoyed reading your interview, and am sure that everyone else will as well!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
I just lost my turquoise baby a month ago, so now there are just 2. One normal GCC, Zippy 19 years old and a Pineapple GCC, Halen is 11 years old. I adopted both in August of 2018.
2. What got you interested in birds?
I was on my way to get a hamster at PetSmart. I saw a little blue budgie in an aquarium sitting next to what looked like a crow. Apparently he was about to be adopted for an aviary but they accidentally clipped his wings. He was so sad sitting outside the cage with the other budgies...had to take him home.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
Joy, stress and mess! The love for them is so unique and I hope I'll always be capable of living with some.
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
I've learned to have the best vacuum I could buy, to be much more patient and to go to be earlier since there is no way I'll be sleeping in ever again!
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
Like I said, I just lost my Buey. I'll never forget holding him as he passed and he reached up...preened my eyelashes and gave me kiss before he left.
(Pic of the way he liked to be cuddled attached.) A lighthearted memory was walking into my bathroom and seeing my yellow sided knock over all the toilet paper taking his trundling fascination to the next level. He looked at me like he just walked in too and had no idea what happened! (Pic attached.)
6. Where is your birds main living area?
The front room. If I get a new baby he'll have a cage out there as well but a sleeping cage in my room with me. I miss a birdie joining me in the shower!
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
Just change the usual, getting rid of all the candles, replacing cookware and stop cleaning with chemicals. And of course now my home has branches and orbits hanging from all the ceilings.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
No groups other than Avian Avenue.
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
A BIGGER HOUSE for them to fly around!
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
No other bird, I would love to have a couple that liked other birds though. My first 2 use to sit on my shoulder and preen each other. The ones I have now want to be single birds.
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
Typically, wake up and feed them. Give time to eat then they come out and I clean their cages. I work from home so they are out most of the day. Zippy likes to hang out in a cabinet next to me and Halen is either in my hand or on the play area. He has taught me to type left handed, lol. (Pic of him in my hand attached)
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
It's harder than you'd think. I worry about everything! I mean even starting laundry, I have to have my eyes on everyone before I start the cycle. But there is nothing better than some beak grinding in your ear
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
In my case I wouldn't bother with so many toys. Zippy likes to chase medicine bottles, Halen only likes bells and Buey just wanted to chew shoelaces. I have wasted so much money on toys that apparently just looked like bird eating monsters.
14. What other hobbies do you have? Hobbies?
You mean there's time after cleaning, lol. Just hanging with family, binge watching shows and bit of shopping.
15. Anything else you would like to share?
Take time to take pictures...it's not easy since they're always moving...but it's worth it.
