Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am happy to announce that Wendy is March's Mayor of the Month.
I enjoyed reading your interview, and am sure that everyone else will as well!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
Joey: 7 years old on March 20, BHC
Zoey: 21+ years old, male, Pied cockatiel
Iggy: 21+ years old, Male, Pearly cockatiel
2. What got you interested in birds?
One day I visited a bird store and enjoyed talking to all of the parrots. They were amazing!
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
Laughter and companionship (someone else to talk to other than myself).
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
My birds expanded my awareness of how little I know, keeping me forever humble.
I learned that all living beings deserve respect and love.
And now I understand how to look at them with kind eyes and soft heart.
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
Joey came hopping down the stairs and said “What do we do?”
I did not know what we should do.
6. Where is your birds main living area?
During the summer they have the master bedroom. Winter time they are upstairs in the sunny room.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
No, I haven’t made changes to my house but mainly repurposed rooms as the birds needed it.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
Not at this time.
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
I would love to have a stainless steel playtop cage for Joey.
For Iggy and Zoey, a custom 1-level cage with a lot of floor space as they are starting to have mobility issues.
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
I would like to adopt a WBC friend for Joey. At the bird store where I got him, he had a WBC friend. Unfortunately he/she was taken.
Once a week we watch a Chickie and JoJo video and it is always a cake reunion.
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
6:30 a.m.: I wake up make their breakfast and my breakfast. Mash is cooling while I have my breakfast.
7:30: Feed them and turn on the tv. Joey likes to watch Sesame Street.
They also like to look out the window. Joey often wolf whistles at the gardeners. I also take Joey around the house to look out the windows, “peekaboo” the bird in the mirror and silly things like that. On warm days Joey gets to sun outside.
3-4 ish: When I get home it is chop time. I clean the cages and birdroom.
When the sun starts setting, Joey is already on his sleep perch. If I disturb him, OMG, he gives me beak. They get covered at about 6 p.m.
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
They get very animated and expressive when you talk, whistle and sing to them.
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
I would have created an environment like Saroj has for her flock.
.....and buy a bigger house!
14. What other hobbies do you have?
Painting (in pastels, watercolors and oils), gardening, visiting art museums, and learning to speak Caique and Cockatiel.
15. Anything else you would like to share?
I have come to realize that birds are still of the wild.
And as such, I am their caretaker and am charged with the task giving them the best home.
It is a challenge to find the balance that honors the wild of the parrot -
as he is living in an everyday human life
watching Sesame Street while eating AO birdie bread.
Thank you for this honor and privilege to be part of this forum.
