Dear bird specialists,
My two Cockatiels have been living together now for almost 2 years, and though they were never the kindest couple, they would lovingly scratch oneanother's heads in the evenings, and she would always follow him around. They live free in the house, and can go wherever they want. Recently the female started laying eggs. I have a nestbox for them now and there are three eggs inside it. The female now occupies it, and viciously attacks the male when he tries entering. They aren't just warning nips either... If anyone has any solutions, please reply:)

I would get the male another cage so he has his own space.

It could indicate that they aren't a true couple, or the female just doesn't understand that the male is only trying to help because it's her first time.

It may be best to keep them separated for the majority of the time, but still allow some interaction between them. The female could possibly change her mind.

When Gracie Tiel and her mate, Chip hatched their first chick, Gracie refused to allow Chip back into the cage where the little box containing the eggs and new chick resided. I called Gracie's breeder and she said if I didn't set up another cage for Chip, Gracie might kill him for trying to get in to sit on the nest. Up until the baby hatched, both birds had taken turns sitting on the eggs for weeks. So I locked Chip out of the nest cage and set up Chip's old cage right beside Gracie and the nest. Chip climbed over to the side nearest to the nest and hung there longingly.

That evening when I left both birds out of their cages for supper as usual, Gracie flew up to eat with me and Chip ran to the nest, fed the baby and snuggled down on the nest. When Gracie returned, she threw him of the cage. She continued to do this, while eggs continued to hatch, for another two weeks, when she was struggling to care for five chicks alone. Then one day she let Chip stay after she ate breakfast with me and from that time on, Chip and Grace raised their chicks together. They hatched seven clutches together until I had to institute in egg birth control.
