Hi!

Has anyone made natural dyes for toys before?

I'm a bit wary of commercial dyed toys and would like to make my own if possible.

Just wanna add some colour to the cage!

I use food colouring diluted in alcohol and soak wooden blocks but not all wood absorbs it well so I'm curious to hear what others do.

I've read that natural dyes made from fruit etc may be a bit too attractive to birds, and that they may try eating the wood rather than just chewing it.

@Mizzely and @Macawnutz both dye their own wood - they may be able to advise you on what's best to use.

I've never made my own dye. I use Vitacritter which is designed for birds and small animals, and sometimes I use Wilson's gel. These are the directions I follow for the gel.
