Making chains safe?

I bought this toy just now (only went for bird food and ended up spending the equivalent of $60 on other toys...typical!). Obviously the chain isn't safe. I was considering threading thick hemp rope through it. Would that be enough, or do I need to remove it entirely? I should be able to, it just might be awkward because it's so fixed on and I don't have a lot of tools at home.

I would thread teeshirt material through it to fill the spaces.... Or remove it and swap for something else.
It can be hard to find safe beads with super large holes.

Ah interesting idea! I would be a bit anxious about replacing it with what I do have (hemp rope) just as I'm not sure how well I'd be able to support it so it doesn't fall. But I'm sure I have an old t-shirt somewhere.

It's a large round wooden hoop with some shreddable bark round the edges, and they absolutely love bark of any kind. They favour the "natural" toys over anything plastic.

Maybe some osrt of tube over the chain... a slush puppy straw (those big fat ones), or a small PVC pipe? Or vet wrap it?

Vet wrap! I definitely have some stashed away! I also have some paper straws around that I sometimes use for toys. Nice idea!
