Tonight, after eating dinner, then being on his atom for awhile we went to put Zazzoo (2yr old B&G macaw) to bed there was mucous pouring from his nostrils!

I flushed his nares with warm saline, and sent a message to his vet. I have no idea what this could be so out of the blue. DH is going to be taking him to the vet tomorrow.

Any thoughts? I am trying not to freak out.

He gets the moto mister daily. The shower, not so much. I hope it is that simple.

The steam is really good for macaws or birds with respiratory issues.

Kiwi, when she first came to us, sneezed and sneezed. It cleared up right away, now she gets plenty of bathroom time and she rarely sneezes.

I hope that is all it is.

Was it clear? Could he have inhalled a seed hull and the body is trying to get rid of it? Did anything get sprayed? Could it have been water? You know, like in humans when you laugh and milk comes out your nose? Prayers for Zazoo.

It was clear. But there was LOTS of it. It was streaming down his beak.

I have a Macaw, Quinn, who is allergic to meat!
He does that when he eats meat...so he does not get it any more and hasn't done it since...At first we didn't know what was causing it...we taught him to "blow nose" when it was happening! It took time to find out what was happening but once we did ....it cleared up...
Please let us know what the vet says and how he is doing...:hug8:

Does he get lots of steamy bathroom time?

Kiwi had that problem and the vet recommended lots of steamy time in the washroom.
My vet recommended the same for Max when he had his sinus infection this past spring.

He didn't have much of a nasal discharge though, just red, swollen nares...

Good luck, Debbie.

The vet wrote me back this morning. Zazzoo woke up with no sign of a discharge, no sneezing. We decided to do saline flushes and just keep an eye on it and not rush him in.

That was just so weird!

As suggested a good 15 minute visit to a steamy bathroom is good for your bird.

Nasal flushes with saline help but for a possible bacteria infection You might consider flushing your birds nares with GSE mixed 2 drops/cup of sterile water. This is a safe nasal flush for birds and humans alike, we have used this solution many times over the years. Next time you talk to your vet ask him about it.

As always a call or visit to your avian vet is recommended.
