A thread for posting how much our lovebird eggs weigh!

OK here we go,
3 nice healthy eggs from Lapis,

1 nice egg (a little short, but ok ) from her little sister Adélie;

Dummy egg weight,
I don't know if they all weigh the same, I just picked on from the box at random,

Adélies egg weight,

Lapis eggs weights,

I think Aldora (mum) may lay soon, if she does ill add that here...

We can safely say a lovebird egg weighs approx. 4g

I'm reading on this because I'm curious. It appears that both fertilized and unfertilized are layed with a blastodisc, which when fertilized becomes a blastoderm, so there isn't any actual embryonic development until after laying, assuming there is incubation, so fertilized and unfertilized would weigh about the same. Also, I read that birds require many sperm per egg in order for a successful chick. Weird!

Yes, you can sometimes see the germinal disc when you crack an egg open (I know you are vegan, but yes it is visibile)

I can´t read the full article, but I read this one;

So the only weight difference in the eggs would be these sperm - minute :)

Fascinating that the hen can regulate how many sperm go into the egg!

Aldora's on 3rd clutch of the year, (early Jan, mid June and now)
IMG_20200729_222103.jpg
She didn't lay a single egg in 2019 I don't think. If she did it would have been early in the year in spring, but I do not recall her laying.

Those are some accurate scales. Can you weigh the birds on it or is it too small?

Hard to get them to stand on the plate. Most will, but others, no way. Can weigh little chicks on it no problem though :)
For visuals, you would struggle to stand a coke tin on it, I think it would overlap a little. A bird that stands where they are put would be easy to weigh.

edit; 5cm across, 6cm down ;)

Another one here a little cheaper;

Have a look around. There are some with larger plates that will weigh to 0.01g
