Good morning, I gave 4 drops of Beaphar Bird wormer to my Lovebird (she's approx. 2 years old) directly into the beak this Saturday. Now she's breathing hard and is making a little noise (like something is blocked in her nostrils and sounds like a heartbeat in her nostrils), her tail is bobbing, she sleeps a lot and stay still. There's no avian vet in my country. I don't want to lose my bird, I am desperate but I don't know what to do to help her. Help me please. Thanks IMG_20210721_131452.jpg

Hello Christelle, and Welcome!

I'm sorry to hear that your lovie isn't feeling well. What made you decide to give her a deworming medication? What sort of symptoms was she having?

There may be a vet in your area who could help. Have you called your local clinics to ask? The Association of Avian Veterinarians has a website with a "Find A Vet" function. I've linked it below. If you search using that tool, you may find someone nearby who you did not know about.

Sometimes our members know about vets in different countries if you share the name of the country where you live.

Hello Kassiani,

Thanks for your response. I am from Mauritius. Our vets are specialised in dogs and cats. I went to a pet shop to seek help for one of my Lovebird (another one) which was sick. The guy asked me if I used to deworm my birds and I said no. Then he told me to do so. I dewormed my five Lovebirds on Saturday and all of them are OK except Winnie (picture sent previously). What can I do to make Winnie active as before and resolve her breathing issue?

I'm afraid none of us can diagnose your bird over the internet, and we aren't vets either. Tail bobbing is a sign that a bird is struggling to breathe. It may not be something that can be cured by and over the counter or home remedy. And I don't think birds need to be dewormed if they are not showing any signs of an infestation. I hope you can try to contact the clinics below so that your sweet bird can be seen. In the meantime, to help you bird conserve it's energy and strength, placing it in a hospital cage is recommended. You could use a small travel carrier to reduce movement and activity, and keep it warm with plenty of water and food if your bird will eat.

There also seems to be an exotic animal vet in Tamarin. Sometimes, exotic vets also see birds. Westminster is the name of the clinic, I think. It was hard for me to pin down a location.

I hope she will be okay. If you can't see a vet in person, perhaps try an on-line vet?
