We found out one year old love bird in his cage with swollen eyes , lethargic, not himself . He flew a little bit and will ship but keeps puffing up closing his eyes and sounds raspy . He was happy and normal this afternoon but we put in a freshly cut dried gourd in his cage for a bird house . He don’t love it . We did house work ran errands then when we came home we found him like this . Any advice as to what happened? We have not again vet in our area to help us

If you could share your approximate location, hopefully members can help find a vet...

How is he doing now? Do you have a regular vet he sees? My vet isn’t an avian vet but has looked after my birds since 2004.

Unfortunately we don’t have one , he’s very quiet puffed up and doesn’t want to open his eyes , he slept on me all night

Ventura Co. has to be one of the most populated areas in the USA. Of course there are avian vets there.

I googled avian vet ventura county and many names of vets came up. Wish you the best of luck getting an emergency appointment tomorrow!

You need to find somewhere to take him. He looks bad.

I agree, the sooner you get him to a vet the better. Since you were gone part of the day after you put the gourd in his cage you don't know if he actually went in it unless you've seen him go in it. Even though it was air dried in the sun it doesn't mean there aren't any mold spores inside the gourd. By all means take it out and bag it but keep it and take it with you to a vet to have them examine it for any mold that may have affected your bird. As soon as possible.

Gourds have been long used for many purposes but when cleaning them out it is recommended for people to wear a mask to avoid breathing in the dust from the inside of dried gourds. Birds have a much more sensitive respiratory system than we do.

Don't know how far you are from Calabasas but you could try here:
Unfortunately they are closed today but maybe they have a recording regarding emergency services.
Also there may be a facility that doesn't have a certified avian specialist but does have vets who have a lot of experience with birds so it's worth calling around and asking if they treat birds. When I had to find an emergency service I would also ask how many birds they might see during a day or a week and if they said none or maybe one or two I would keep calling.
