Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome (LPS)

Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome is a seasonal disease that effects primarily rainbow lorikeets in the NSW and QLD area, and occurs between october and june, though often the highest number of cases is between december and february.

This disease causes the inability to fly, hopping/wobbliness, changes to vocals, possible head tilt, wing paralysis, foot paralysis and in severe cases inability to blink or eat.

Birds can recover if help is sought very quickly and they are given medication and taken care of. Though severe cases are often euthanised.

If you find a bird that you suspect may have LPS, call your local wildlife rehabber or RSPCA immendiately.

Within QLD, especially in the bird community, this is known about and followed. It is an incredibly sad illness.

A similar thing was happening to corellas a year or so ago, whole flocks were found under the trees they had been roosting in- I think that turned out to be poisoned or mouldy grain they had all been eating.

As I am seeing more and more IG and FB posts from people with no bird experience finding Lorikeets who are in serious need of fast specialised medical help and they are unsure what to do with them I thought it might be useful to give this thread a bump.
