Someone I work with is getting a Lord Derbyan parakeet this weekend. He's had two over the years and lost his last one just a few months ago. Another one has come into his life and this bird is predominately yellow. Has anyone seen this particular variety? It's mostly yellow like a golden conure is, but it is definitely a Derby. I'm trying to get him to give me a picture so I can post it and try to figure out what the mutation is. We thought Lutino, or maybe opaline but that doesn't seem to be it. I'll post a picture if he gives me one.

Picture would definitely help!

I would guess lutino, opaline or pied myself.

Otherwise, a possible hybrid.

If this is not an older bird with liver failure.

That is a LOT different from the normal, or wild, type. I would've said lutino, but the chest colors are throwing me off. I do not think it's health-related, either. Unusual.

She’s 7 years old. I don’t know the whole story but she had more yellow than usual as a chick and this started filling in between 2 and 3 years of age. I don’t believe it’s a health issue either.

Do you think it's a new, undocumented mutation? I looked up the wild coloration; that's very different. After all, all mutations were new once upon a time.

Pied and/or "acquired pied" may be what to call it. To confirm, she would need to be bred.... and if no offspring of hers end up looking like her, then one of her male offspring would need to be bred back to her to see if it is in fact a mutation.

He doesn't plan on breeding her. I'll pass the info along to him. They are amazing birds but so uncommon here. I've only seen 1 of them in person and that was the female he had that passed a few months ago.
