Looking to Adopt

Hello! New here, and I'm not entirely sure where I'd post something like this. If the thread should be elsewhere, please let me know. <3

I've been thinking about getting a bird for a while now, and after doing some research I think either a cockatiel or a conure would be best suited for me. There are a couple of conure breeders in the area I believe, but I haven't been able to find anyone that breeds or sells cockatiels, and I've been digging for the past few days.

I was wondering if anyone here might know any breeders/sellers around the Grand Junction, Colorado area? I know there are some in Denver, but that would be a long trip to make to meet birds that might not fit/click with me (4+ hour drive).

Please don't buy a bird from a breeder/shop. There are countless numbers of those birds in rescues through no fault of their own and you could be a special saviour to one of them.

I'm going to respectfully disagree with JL, up to a limit.

I would totally look into adopting, if you can find in your area whose needs you can meet. Adoption is also a good option if you know you want a male or a female.

If you can't find the right 'tiel to adopt, then don't go the adoption route. I see the situation as similar to adopting dogs or cats. It is wonderful if you are able to, but don't beat yourself up if it's not right for you. Just find the best, most reputable breeder you can.

Now, in terms of not fitting/clicking/etc. Very few birds click right away, and it can take months or, in some cases years. If you do get a bird, you need to assume right away that you are his or her forever home, and be committed for the long haul. 'Tiels can live up to 25 years, and if you think that you might not be able to commit to and love the bird that long, then you need to really think about it.

I would strongly suggest seeing if there's a foster program out there, and foster a 'tiel first, before getting one.

Cockatiels are pretty easy going birds. Some aren't as friendly as others but can come around. I can't imagine any in rescues, humane societies or even being rehomed on Craigs List not making wonderful companions. There are WAY too many rehomed birds not to make adoption a first priority.

Both are very nice birds, but I am partial to cockatiels. Are there any rescues near you? Or often they even have birds posted on craigs list.
