Looking for a Pionus

Hi,

I’m new here not but not new to birds. I am interested in getting a Pionus (I like all the species). While looking on the internet it’s hard to tell but I would guess a lot are scams. I’m not a fan of shipping either. I have hand raised birds in the past but don’t currently have any birds. Are there any legit Pionus breeders on the East Coast (US) (I’m in VA). There is a bird store close to me with a pair but they are $6000 each and when I asked which species they were, the person working said they’d have to check with the owner. But they were kind of in rough shape, the tail feathers were dirty and missing. They didn’t look great - they might have been whitecaps or dusky. But I couldn’t tell. Any ideas? Or suggestions? Thank you!

Oh, and yes I’ve looked at local rescues.

I’m Also in VA - we’re pretty much a desert on good breeders for a lot of species. Are you willing to look outside of the east coast? Or perhaps FL, they have loads of breeders down there.

Thanks for replying. Yes, I am. It’s hard to tell which are legit though. And I’m not a fan of shipping birds, even if I had to fly down and go get it it’s still be a pretty stressful pick up. I would consider it, I guess. Do you know if any trustworthy breeders?

Not in VA, but on birdsnow.com I did see a pionus, and one up in MD. Definitely do some vetting though!

Maybe look for exotic pet expos or bird fairs that will be coming into your area, and see whether any of the breeders going might have Pionus.

Not near Virginia at all, but if you're willing to travel, it looks like Parrot Stars (a bird store in Arlington Heights, Illinois) has some pionus (3 male and 1 female, all blue headed). I believe Parrot Stars is a reputable bird store, and from my search on here, several people have recommended them in the past.

I’m no help on a breeder. But I am in East TN. About 30 mins from Bristol VA.
I travel almost every weekend for reptile expos so we are in the Carolina’s, West Virginia, middle TN and sometimes GA. If you found a bird that was in an area I travel to I would be happy to help with transport vs shipping, but that may not be helpful as you may still live quite a ways away from Bristol or any of the WV areas we go.

Thank you! I would be willing to travel a good bit!
