Lily has liver disease. She's currently on milk thistle and lactulose for it, and we were looking at getting the Lily of the desert aloe detox for her also. We did this for our bird Peatri, and it seemed to help. The problem is that this was a loooong time ago, and we can't remember how much to give and how often. Any advice?

I'm looking through old threads here on the avenue to try and find a dosage. So far all I've seen is:

"For people who have used Aloe Detox, if giving by water, some have used up to 50% dilution with water, given daily. Some have put aloe detox on anything the bird would eat, such as toast, without being diluted."

"I basically eyeball about 1/2 - 3/4 tsp of detox into each 20 oz bowl of water"

Is it going to be a problem that it has buckthorn bark in it?

Burdock root was discussed in the thread I linked. Here's the exact post.

Thanks! I actually asked about the buckthorn bark, not burdock root, but that was a good thread to look at

The Kitchen Physician link no longer goes to that article.

Where are you seeing buckthorn bark?

Looks like they've changed the formula then. I wouldn't risk it myself. If it's a known toxin, then that's going to stress the liver more to clear it.

I used it when it was branded as Naturade Aloe Detox. Also there used to be two different Lily of the Desert Aloe Detoxes. Now I just see that one version.

I was just looking around on Harrison's website to look at something in an email they sent and saw they offer an aloe and give info on oral use.
their product is called George's Aloe vera. I would buy that to use with their instructions.
