Kei is a dusky pionus.
I got him as a rehome from a couple in Arkansas who bred sun conures. They were a good example of bad breeders. They fed him "cockatiel seed" and very little fresh food (mostly grapes, apples, and frozen veggie mix). They also smoked around him and the baby suns. We met them in a parking lot and they were smoking in their van when we drove up with Kei and a bunch of babies they were hand feeding. They also over clipped him and it took years for his feathers to all come in properly. He was almost a year old when I got him. I was able to find his breeder (who was shocked of the conditions he came out of) and find out his hatch date which is February 12th 2004, which makes him almost 6 years old now! :omg:
He is very sweet to me, but doesn't care for strangers. He tolerates a few other people. He likes my bird sitter so that's a plus. He especially hates men and has actually flown at some people to try to attack them.
It was an ordeal to get him to eat fresh food, but I eventually was able to, and it now makes up about 75% of his diet. He especially loves orange things, which is his favorite color. I attribute his love of orange to him growing up with sun conures (he was only a few weeks old when the people got him and he was hand fed with their suns.) Maybe some day I will get him a sun friend...
Anyways, enjoy some pics.

Thanks guys. I have seen 2 dusky pis for adoption since adopting him (over the past 5 year), and boy did I tried to convince my dad. I just love them, they are so funny, and beautiful. I hope whoever got them know how lucky they are, because I sure do.

He is beautiful!

Thanks for sharing the story, seeing a bird come from that type of home and go to a much better one always makes me feel happy.
