Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am happy to announce that tattoosiva is June's Mayor of the Month.
I enjoyed reading your interview, and am sure that everyone else will as well!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)
Watson: Green Cheek, Bubble: Green Cheek, Qwackers: Cinnamon green cheek, Cuddles: Rosifron green cheek
2. What got you interested in birds?
My parents bought a cockatoo two years before I was born, my sister takes care of him now.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
Honestly just happiness. They are always happy to see me or food,
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
Patience. Your birds give you a lot of tests and you fail a lot of them.
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
I had a foot operation and fell in the living room away from the phone. My first baby that we lost a few years ago BH, climbed down his rescue rope and just sat there with me until my partner got home.
6. Where are your birds main living area?
The living room, always someone there and that’s where all the good melodrama takes place.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
The general bird safe stuff (no non-stick, candles) but the biggest change was eating habits. The flock enjoys eating with us at times, so no salt, butter or unhealthy food when eating with us. We do relent on pizza night and let them have some no sauce with cheese.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
No, AA is about it. I know there are some good Facebook groups but I have enough distractions in my life.
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
Those large clamp on hooks for cages. Shipping them is twice the cost of the hooks.
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
No, we feel blessed with the flock we have
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
As I’m gone a lot, I try to have enough toys, pre-made and portioned food to make it easier for my partner. He also takes them to work 4 days a week and I spend my day off with everyone
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
Birds will be birds, they will poop on fine linens, scream when happy, sad, to each other or at an empty box. You can’t force them to eat what do not like to eat. Yelling, swearing or getting mad have no effect on them, its attention. Birds are going to bird, you might want a cuddly, quiet, playful bird but you get a don’t touch me, loud and stink eye bird. It could change or never change. Just honor your commitment even if you don’t get the bird you have dreamed of.
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
Importance of toys and foraging, a busy bird is a quiet bird.
14. What other hobbies do you have?
I enjoy reading, napping and watching movies with flock. I can make the most stupid observations about the film we’re watching and they act like I’m a film historian.
15. Anything else you would like to share?
Just happy to be a part of AA.
