Is your aviary covered? What sunlight will the plants get? I ordered 4” clay pots to start the ficifolia. I want to grow a couple in the flying room but my palm never thrived in filtered light.

My aviary is about 5m long. About 2.5 meters on the left is covered with clear plastic corrugated sheet. The remainder is left open to the elements, as when it rains, they birds love to flap about in it!

Where in the room was the palm?

Nice! It’s all covered with lexan and very bright but oblique direct sun from the east and west. The palm got no direct sun. I had a six foot tall areca palm but it didn’t survive the winter. That one did well! Also had pots of petunias but they stopped blooming in there.

That's a shame. Mist palms that I have had don't like being in direct sunlight., so that's a bit odd. Have you tried citrus trees? They don't do well with too much sun, so would probably work quite well
