1. What kind of birds do you have, age, species and names.
Sugar is a 10 yr old Green Cheek Conure that we have had since she was about 3 months old.
Boogie is a 14 yr old Congo African Grey that has been with us for almost a year.
2. What got you interested in birds?
I have always been an animal lover and birds are so amazing to me. My Grandmother that lived with us when I was very young had a Canary that would sing to her all the time and my Aunt had a Budgie that was a little character. I enjoyed being around their birds and always wanted my own.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
They bring me joy and laughter on a daily basis
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
I have learned patience and to take things one day/one step at a time. I have also learned to laugh at myself and to enjoy every day and not take everything so seriously.
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
The first time that Boogie allowed me to give him scritches is something that I will always treasure.
6. Where is your birds main living area?
They are in the living room with everyone else. I am planning on converting one of the bedrooms to a dedicated bird room this year so they can have their own space and more toys.
7. Did you change things in your home to accomodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
Our house has always been kid and animal friendly so no major changes were made.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
I volunteer with 911ParrotAlert
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
I want to build an outdoor aviary that is accessed from the house so they can have more outside time without having to be caged.
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
there are a few on my list - Hyacinth Macaw - their beauty and grace are amazing
Mealy Amazon - I am fascinated by them - their personality, appearance
BE2 - I need another mischief maker in my life
Patagonian Conure - I like their personalities and think one would fit in here perfectly
11.Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds..
We get up fairly early and start the day with a bite to eat for them (veggies, a little fruit or a scrambled egg occasionally and a couple of almonds or walnuts) and coffee for me. I am home all day and they generally hang out with me and try to help me with whatever I have going that day. Boogie likes to call for the dogs and then laughs when they run around puzzled, trying to find me. Supper time, they generally have what we do (set aside before any salt, butter, etc is added). They hang out with us afterwards until bedtime.
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
Having a bird means your life will never be the same - and earning their trust is a one of the greatest gifts you will ever receive
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
There is really nothing major I would do differently -
14. What other hobbies do you have?
I have several other animals besides the birds (chickens, ducks, goat, raccoon, 6 dogs - they keep me pretty busy otherwise. Reading, embroidery, gardening are some of the other things I enjoy doing
15. Anything else you would like to share
Sharing my life with the birds and other animals here has been an humbling but oh so rewarding journey. I have learned so much from them and met so many new people because of them. The folks here on the Avenue are the best cyber family anyone could ask for.
