Hello everybirdy!
I have a quick question. Is giving too much veggies bad? This might sound silly, but can they gain some weight from it? I think I once read that you should always provide the most amount of veggies they want, isn’t that true? (I have budgies)

I offer mine a bowl of veggies everyday and let them eat as much of it as they’d like. As long as you offer them the correct vegetables each day (always considering the water content of the veg also as you don’t want to cause them to have watery droppings) I believe that should be fine. I’ve read that about a quarter of their diet should be fruit/vegetables - however I tend to only give fruit as a treat.

Thanks so much for replying. I’m always worried I am giving them too much, and that they could gain weight. They just really love their veggies!!

Haha mine are the same! Veggies should be okay. If you’re looking out for fatty foods millet and seeds can contain lots of fat (unsure as to whether your birds are on a seed diet or pellets). So if you just watch their intake of that they should be okay :)

In theory, no. Veggies actually are usually low calorie compared to seeds, nuts, pellets, etc. They are also very low in fat and often protein. Now, if they only eat veggies and aren't getting protein, fat, or other nutrients (D3, etc) then technically yes, they no longer have a balanced diet. Too much of a good thing and all ;)

I feed my birds this pellet/seed/veggie/fruit mix that was recommended by an avian specialist in my area. She even feeds it to her own birds. She agreed with me that it is very hard to find ANY Pellets in our area. Its the healthiest option we could get. My birds also get veggie chop every morning, which consists of legumes, grains, veggies, chia and sesame seeds, etc. Other than their veggie chop, my birds also really like having “whole” veggies in the day. So that was my question, is it okay to give them more veggies other than their veggie chop they had already finished?

Again it should be as long as they are getting all of their required nutrients :) I imagine for most birds it's not a concern
