Hey guys!

First time poster, about to get a Cockatiel, but before that I want to get the cage done. I picked up this wood, which is the perfect size and diameter, but unsure of the source.
Is it safe, if it was under the tree, or should I cut fresh from a living tree? I ran it through bleach and hot steam, then rinsed, now it sits in the sun, prolly staying there for a week.

Without knowing the species of wood I couldn't say if it was safe or not.

Most woods are hard to identify without additional information like leaf shape, configuration, type, tree size, location, etc

I'm in Michigan, USA, I'm under snow already. I understand the limitation, but that doesn't mean that identifying a stick is any easier ;)

So I went out there, used a plant ID app, and I'm 90% certain its either an Eastern Redbud(Cercis canadensis), or Black Poplar. Cause these two distinct ones I could find, but the stick was just on the ground , could have come from either.

Poplar is safe, and from what I can tell from google searches, so is Redbud.

If there is any doubt though that it's not one of these, just skip it. A perfect perch is not perfect if it can potentially cause harm to your bird.

"When in doubt, throw it out" is pretty much the rule to live by!

The things you ban look for in any wild found branches are, were they found near a road, exhaust fumes are not good. The hardest thing to know. As far as what type of tree that is fr I can't say. If you are not sure buy a couple from the pet store.

Okay I threw that stick away, it had black specs and they smelled strange, and its not worth it. Question tho. How bad is it that a few cars move around that area, where I can get some wood?

Try a good pet store. Yes it sound silly yo buy a branch but it's safe, has the mounting hardware and as most will be Manzanita, Dragon Wood or Cholla Cactus and therefor much to tough for a Tiel to chew will last for years.

I have the same problem with driftwood-perfect pieces for everything- play stands, perches, hanging play gym but it’s impossible to identify so it all gets passed on by. Are there any grapes around you ? Those vines/wood are safe.

Sorry for the typos, I have a wireless keyboard and it's dying. half the key are barely working. I' guess I'll have to buy a new tomorrow.

I recently picked up some branches in the woods but I'm in the same predicament. Guess I'll just throw them out and try again once they have leaves again. You can find some really nice natural perches in stores. Where in Europe? AA has members from all around the world and will likely have good suggestions. :)

So, I managed to ID the Black Poplar, and cut fresh from a lower branch. Question still stands, can it be used, if there are some cars passing by? Maybe a few hundred a day.

Realistically there are going to be very few areas any of us go to that aren't exposed to pollution.
