Hubs and I were up at Apollo this weekend (buying toys of course!!) and they had a ball (forget if it was a wiffle ball or a grapevine-type ball) and it had streamers on it that looked like crepe paper.

I didnt buy it as we bought a few other toys instead but I was thinking of making my own out of crepe paper.

Would crepe paper be safe?
If not what else could I use?

I stopped at Michaels tonight and got a few wooden things.
I didnt get crepe paper however Im thinking I should have.

We all, or at least I do, use newspaper that the birds shred.
I cant believe crepe paper would be any more 'unsafe' than newspaper???
And it would shred readily as its paper so no nails etc. would get caught.

I think it would be safe, but I'm not positive. I have some lying around here in a drawer. If it's safe, I should clean out the drawer and put the crepe paper to good use.

I would really be leary of it , the way the dye comes out of the paper. I have some green colored raffia here and I am afraid the dye in that. I hope someone can tell us for sure:D

I may have a substitute here!

I was searching for beads etc cause I am all out and came accross greyfeathertoys.com!!!
Ive been on their site before but this time...holy cow!
I see ALOT of toy parts I will be ordering today!!!

Here might be an alternative to crepe paper (on greyfeathers)

All Natural Paper Rope

Since I have to place an order anyway Im going to get some.
In years past I used to get this stuff at the local craft store to make paper flowers out of. It certainly looks like the same thing.
I dont see why you could not cut a length of paper rope, then slice it into strips then weave it in/out of a wiffle ball!

I would think it would be ok, but don't know for sure. The dye can't be any worse than newspaper or phone book ink.

Newspapers use soy based ink. Anyway thats what I was told for here in the us. When crepe paper gets wet it gets really nasty. Paper rope or raffia might be safer

Not to sound completely strange here and don't even remember how it happened but I do know I've tasted crape paper before and it has a funky flavor. As I said I don't remember how it came about but it's a taste that has stuck in my memory.:o:

I've bought toys before that have crepe paper streamers in them, the birds love them and seem unharmed. They didn't even get coloured beaks from the dye coming off. I think it should be fine...

It never occurred to me that it could be bad for the birds. They've been playing with it for several months and seem ok. I will check into it before I let them keep playing with it, though.

The package I had said child safe? Do we automatically assume that it means bird safe too? A question surely to ponder.

You'd think it would. But chocolate and avocados are child safe.:(

You could use coffee filter paper. It can be cut into strips and be used for making chewables and would probably work well as a paper mache/pinata toy for the fids.

Now that you mention pinata....
Whilst placing yet ANOTHER toy order I also purchased a pinata and didnt even give it a thought!
What are pinatas made from?
Crepe paper!

My order wont be here until next week but Im going to venture to say...
crepe paper is ok as the pinata was in fact for sale on a bird toy website.

(i already use coffee filters but wanted something in long streamers)

A better alternative to Crepe paper is Adding Machine Tape. It is easily died with food coloring, and once dry makes great and SAFE streamers for birds to play with.
