Hello all my Tyrion had a very bad accident...he has a fair sized hole in the right side of his beak close to the top of it right under his nose holes (having issues finding g the right words ) he is at emergency as of yesterday morning right after it happened ...I can link pics if needed but they are very graphic..anyway my questions can an African Grey live a normal life after something like this and do you think the beak will repair itself if only the top layer was caved in and it didn't go through to his mouth...I know again with out pics or a vet report it's going to be hard to say..if you guys need pics let me know and I'll link them

***** WARNING GRAPHIC PICTURES***** Ok here are the pics with his beak clotted they are not as graphic as the ones right after it happened at the vet clinic ...still waiting for the avian vet to look at him this am he will need sedation to have it probed ....I am so worried about him he is my heart bird and I am having issues with people telling me to euthanize him due to the money issue and that he wont be the same bird when he comes home ... I am worried about his quality of life afterward... I have been told he wont have one by a bird breeder I know ...if anyone can give me hope that Im doing the right thing by him with doing more to fix the beak I need some hope ...please

What does your vet think of his prognosis?

I've seen birds with hardly any top beak at all (bitten off in the nest or afterwards) and they have lived years just fine. In an age of 3D printing there also might be good options there, too.

Well the bad part of this is they told me when I called that there was an avian vet in house on Sunday only to find out once I got there that she wouldnt be in til today so I have spent 2500.00 so far and have yet to see an avian vet ..Im a lil upset about this and was going to move him to a vet that had a avian vet there in clinic but was told by the vet looking after him that moving him could dislodge the clot and he could bleed out on the trip to the other vet which was only 5-10 mins away from the vet that he is at so I decided not to take the chance and left him at the vet he is at and wait til today to see the avian vet .........:(:(:(:(:(

3D printed beaks are so amazing but please don't lose hope yet. You need a real avian vet and possibly a second opinion, even after your first. My GW had a crush injury from another bird with a hole into her sinus and after about two years you would never know it had happened. It really depends from injury to injury how recovery goes.

Prayers lifted to god, poor buddy. Keep the positive thoughts and energy flowing, he will sense that mom is in his corner fighting with him.

Ok finally talked to the avian vet and they are going to sedate him and take xrays and probe his beak wound ...he is in good spirits and a lil spicy but alert and taking water but hasnt eaten for them so they are syringe feeding him ...once the procedures are done they will phone me back and if everything is good I might be able to take him home tomorrow ....please send prayers that he hasnt broken the main bone in his beak and can come home tomorrow or even tonight ...I have read how to make a hospital cage so I am going to get that ready for him ...is there anything any of you can recommend to help with his recovery I am listening ... :( :( :( :( :(

You are going to want them to show you syringe feedings and have them recommend some formula. If your sweetie is not easy to medicate, ask them to flavor the medications or send your prescriptions to a compounding pharmacy to have them compounded and flavored.

So sorry that Tyrion got injured but that's good news that he is coming home. Sending positive thoughts for his recovery.
