Pictures I'm a grandma! Millie hatched some chickies this weekend!

So, Jon went over to the condo Saturday morning and was greeted with high pitched peeping that he knew was not a full grown chicken and what do you know, we have a baby chick, all yellow and sweet! I really didn't think that Millie had any viable eggs. I was just humoring her because she was so set on sitting on her eggs. Then later on Saturday, another one hatched! He's got a little brown head. She's still sitting on the eggs and taking very good care of the babies. I'm praying we don't get any more babies and from now on, after this, all eggs will be removed but I don't have the heart to remove the eggs she has now. The babies are just adorable though. Jon seems to think that we will take them to the breeder we got our chickens from but I don't see that happening...I just get so attached and truth be told, when push comes to shove, I don't think he'll be able to do it either but we'll see...I'm waiting to see how unattached he can really be! In the meantime, I think we're going to have to bite the bullet and re-do a basement room specifically for the chickens!

We did just have a single male but he developed lymphoma and we lost him a day before Thanksgiving last November. We went back to the breeder and were only going to get one and ended up coming home with three hens, all sisters who were absolutely amazing but lost one of them a few months ago...who knew that miniature chickens were so hard to keep alive? So, two of our $30 chickens ended up costing us $1000 after vet bills. The three hens we got were all smooth feathers and our first one that we had was a frizzle (feather mutation). We really wanted a frizzle, so we went back to the breeder this spring and tried to pick out a male with the frizzle mutation and ended up bringing three more home...two males and a female. One of the males and the female have the frizzle mutation and the other roo is a smooth and just gorgeous. So, we had five, two roos and three hens and now we have these two little ones that I'm praying are girls. We may have to take them back to the breeder if they end up being boys because we really can't keep more than two roos together...they get territorial. We'll have to see. I'm excited to see what colors they end up being as well as what feather type.

They aren't like parrots. They generally lay an egg a day and you take them away every day. I think they're cute and I love them and I think I might name one George!

Well, I just thought, since you said she liked sitting on eggs, instead of risking bringing more of them into the world, give her fakes to sit on and get rid of eggs that might be viable.

Best of both worlds, little chicken gets to sit her eggs, but no "oops .. surprise" chicks.
