After searching trademe for weeks (that's NZ's Craigslist for those of you in the USA), and not finding anything perfect, I just had a quick look at the SPCA's online website thinking 'well they dont have pigeons often.. I'll just make sure' and there he was.
He was a pigeon that was found but was unable to find the owner. He has a ziptie as a leg band, and looks to me like a domestic. They don't know his gender, I'm hoping for a girl, but either is fine.

He was what I was looking for, so I put in an application for him and waiting for them to get back to me.

He's 740 kilometers away from me, including a small stretch of water, we're hoping to be able to put him on a pet courier but not sure if that's going to be possible.

His name is Toupee

Wishing you luck!

(I´ve moved your thread into Softbill circle because the Rehome one is moderated, causing slower conversation)

Congratulations! What an adorable pidge! :xflove:Looks like a beard, lol. I can't wait to see more pics when Toupee gets home. Is the head shaggy or something? Just wondering where the name Toupee came from:)

Pigeons are so much fun, I have a small flock of Modenas. Make sure you cut that zip tie off. One of my pigeon hens lost half her leg because of the zip tie moving up farther than it should and tightening (this happened at the breeder before I got her).

Wishing you two happy times. How long do pigeons live?

Seems they live 10 to 15 years if well cared for but there have been at least one who made it past 30.

Sure is a cute pigeon with that flip on the back of it head.

Whatever...wishing you much happiness & a long life with Toupee'

The rescue was being kind and tried to get a local pigeon group who was coming up here anyway to travel the pigeon to us but their plans changed and now they can't.
They asked us to arrange the travel ourselves (which is fine).
But the girl on the phone said 'You do know this is just a pigeon, right? there isn't anything special about him' basically saying he isn't worth the money to fly him here..
Never thought I'd hear such a thing from a SPCA volunteer! He certainly is worth every penny.

Transport has been arranged, he's coming here on Thursday  .
Why are pigeons not valued as much as dogs or cats? Got the same 'it's a pigeon? is there something special about him?' on the phone from transport service.. they tried to recommend us to travel him 700 kms by road because it would cost a little less.. wouldn't do that to him... he's on a 2 hr flight not 700kms by road..
