hey im a young bird mom i own a 2 year old budgie and something has been happening. Basically he is quieter and he has a weird liquid around his mouth that kinda smells like fish i clean it everyday with water but it doesnt go away and it seems like its bugging him a lot also idk he sleeps more and isnt as playful and i havent gone to the vet yet although ive noticed this for the past year. Yes i know its a long time but for the longest time i thought it was nothing but then i went to the vet 2 times and described to them but they arent as specialized so they gave me 2 different medications that i tried (in different times ofc) that didnt work and now idk what to do im going tomorrow to another vet to show them a pic aswell but thats the last vet i have in my town and idek if hes specialised. Please tell me what he has. I saw on the internet that he might have sometjing called “external parasites” (idk for sure cuz i speak another language) but i just wanna know if hes gonna be ok and what else i should do im so scared its eating me from the inside

Okay, if you could answer a few questions, we may be able to figure out a plan.
1. Do you have access to reliable transportation?
2. What country/province/state are you located in?
3. Do you have any other birds?
4. Is your budgie kept indoors or outdoors, what is his diet, and what is his cage set up like?

It's very hard for us to tell what is going on with your bird as none of us are qualified vets...and even if we were wouldn't be able to diagnose over the Internet.

Crop infection, respiratory infection, or other type of bacterial infection seems probable.

I'm so sorry your little bird is sick! Can you tell us what the 2 vets thought might be wrong with your bird? Is there a reason you are going to the vet without taking your bird? Do you have some sort of travel cage?

I dont know what reliable transportation means but im guessing ur asking if i have a car and yes my mom has one but shes constantly working till late and even if i could find a day to get him to a vet out of my town that would be after march 20 cuz my mom works non stop until then. Im located in Moldova, Căușeni and i do not have other pets. I live in a small apartment so he lives indoors. Ive seen on the internet that it might be because he lives indoors a dirty environment which is just not true at all. My room is clean and i try to keep his cage clean aswell. Hes got a pretty big cage if you ask me but its set up on a chair in the corner of my room cuz my room is pretty small and thats kinda the only place i can keep him but its still light and i let him go out of the cage whenever he wants. He eats seeds from the brand “priroda” but i like to switch up the taste for example i sometimes get him coconut, sometimes apple, now its just plain as i try to figure out if maybe its from that. Would maybe a picture of his cage set up help? (Ps im sorry for any mistakes i just want to figure out whats wrong and i dont really focus on my mistakes rn)

Is that easy to treat such diseases? Like would i be able to treat them with medication? Also update guys i went to a pharmacy and they also dont really know what could be going on they told me to change his food but i do change him often and also he eats fruits (he loves apples and bananas a lot). Also they told me they could give me a medication that could either help him or he could die and im so scared

The 2 “vets” were just like pharmacists for animals they werent really as specialised in parrots yk. But one told me it could be from his food and the other thought it was an infection but she gave me some medication for domestic birds as she didnt have anything else and that medication didnt help. I got on the phone today with an actual vet i didnt know we had one in my town but hes the only one and i will be bringing him in maybe the day after tomorrow cuz he asked me to call him again tomorrow. will i have to bring him with the cage or in the little box you get when u buy a parrot? I dont want to scare him

Hi there, I'm sorry your bird isn't feeling well!
You can use a transport cage or a soft shelled pet backpack. Those work well for safe transportation.

Typically anything with a smell from the mouth can indicate a crop infection. In which case a vet should give you a round of antibiotics/antibacterials. Usually where I live that would be something like baytrill. You'd have to talk to your vet about that. Depending on what tests they offer, they may want to do a crop swab.
It could also be something like avian canker. Is it crusty?
Could we maybe see a picture please?

It's almost impossible to tell over the Internet, unfortunately you will need a vet to give an accurate diagnosis. If you can't find a local avian vet, maybe you could find one online that does a video meeting to see what's going on.

Good luck with your bird!

Oh, and does he have any mirrors? Sometimes they will try to regurgitate in them and that can cause crop infections.

did you give the medication for at least 10 days, twice a day?
If it didn't help that could be why. or it could be important to know if you gave it properly and if it is a bacterial infection then the lastest vet will have that info that the bacteria is not sensitive to that antibiotic. Assumoing you will be able to tell them the name of the antibiotic.

Yes he does have mirrors, should i take them off? There was a point when he was obsessed with mirrors but he isnt as obsessed now although he does use it a lot

The medication was a spray that we had to spray on him but we used it for like 5 days or something because thats what the bottle requested us to do. It was for domestic birds i think and that couldve been why it didnt work

If you notice him regurgitating on the mirrors, becomes obsessive with them or they have "milk" on them it might be an idea to remove them. At least until his crop is better...
I'm sorry I don't think the pictures came through. I think your best bet is to get an oral antibiotic medication from a vet. I don't know much about spray on ones, but they might not be as effective as an oral one. Always closely follow the dosage and duration given to you by the veterinarian. :)
Hopefully they can get you something for your bird soon!

I am so sorry for your loss.
You have no reason to feel guilty! The fact that you asked on here and took your bird to the vet shows how dedicated you were to him. He was lucky to have you as his person.
Sending hugs! :sadhug2:
