I think it’s to store them so they can take the materials away to help build their nest.

Exactly. She also takes millet from the sprig, stores it and takes it to her nest to sit and eat in peace while tending eggs.
It is unique to only the Agapornis Roseicollis - the peach faced lovebird.
4 of my 6 can do it currently. Unfortunately Jaime lost his ability to do it as a result of his plucking. Nube is the only one who can´t/could never do it.
It is usually a female trait.
