Can I ask what other birds do you have and breed?

I have no advice for breeding Hahns or any bird for that matter but I do know the breeders I have spoken to here have been more than happy to share any information and offer advice that is helpful for raising and keeping birds or pass on details for others to help you if they know more about a certain topic you need help with or a certain bird.
A few calls around to some registered breeders should get you a phone number or contact details of someone you can talk to about this who is experienced at breeding them, all of the registered breeders I've spoken to have all known of each other through one channel or another so it seems like they are quite supportive of other respected and registered breeders. Most were members of the PSOA.
There are a fair few macaw breeders I have spoken to in a few different states (while looking for my baby I think I called nearly every place in Aus that breeds macaws, lol) most of them seem to breed larger macaws or the YCM's. I think there may be one who advertises in the BirdKeeper magazine (this is only from memory which is not the best lol) who was breeding and selling Hahns as well as some other larger macaws.
Maybe your local bird club can help you out by introducing you to some Hahns breeders?

Welcome to the Avenue :)

I breed tiels and know a little about breeding lories and conures.
There are very little macaw breeders where i am located and they tend to focus on larger macaws such as scarlet and blue and gold

Im not usually in the Macaw corner, but maybe someone from there could share some breeding stories?
Personally i wouldnt start breeding any Macaw at all if i hadn’t had the experience, but we’re not all me :)

I would start with easier species like budgies or cockatiels, but heh..

And ice hocky sucks.

Also, we could all say we wouldnt want breeding parrots when there are so many looking for a good home.. but let me play Devil’s advocate and mention all the poor children in Orphinages and 3th world country’s starving for food...
I dont think that has stopped anyone on these forums from having their own children..
I already breed cockatiels and have 2 large aviares with colonies with combined over 30 birds.
Thank you for your third point aswell, alot of people have mentioned about birds in shelters but that is a really good point

If you don't have a personal skilled experienced mentor, your vision is going to result in a lot of heartache and doomed birds. It takes years of mentorship to do what you want.

Might I suggest a different hobby? How about ice hockey?
Australia isnt exactly the best place for ice hockey because it's pretty warm and dry here, like 40 plus degrees in summer and I am looking to have a future in animals, especially birds so this is why I am sticking to birds and not many other hobbies. Imagine someone saying to you that maybe you should stop being involved in birds and maybe play bingo instead.

I am not sure where this member lives, however not every country has rescues that take birds.
And in some places, there just aren't many birds in shelters, if any.

We do have shelters with birds in them but I can’t see many of them actually being adopted unfortunately. All the shelters/rescues I checked out had the most ridiculous strict rules and basically even after reimbursing the shelter for its costs for the bird care they provide in the foster home and adoption fees you still never completely own the bird. All the ones I checked out only allowed the birds to live outside definitely no inside cages or time and in the event of your death or health taking a turn for the worse you are not just able to hand the bird down to family members or friends who know the bird and would be happy and capable to care for it.....they will first have to go through the same process as you did to adopt after the bird has been returned.
Some of the reasons I mentioned are why I stopped looking to adopt an older bird and bought a baby. There were some very bizarre rules involved so I would be surprised if many birds are ever adopted from the places I checked out. Oh and I wouldn’t have fit the criteria for any of the ones I looked st because I live too far from them so they would not be able to do surprise check up visits if they wanted to.

Hi Matt,
If you ask a mod to move this thread to the breeding forum, you won't get as much flack, and perhaps some more help.
We do have breeders on this forum, but it may be a few days before they see your question.
It's good to know this is not an impulsive decision and that you already have some knowledge.

'Oops' I just saw it was already in the breeders forum.

Sorry about that.

Where I live there is an adoption program that mainly runs through gumtree but they do not have many birds and they also have weird and strict rules about adoption and it costs just as much if not more to buy a new bird and seeing as I am still a minor, they Wouldnt let me adopt a bird anyway.
