How to get caiques to surf?

Hi All,

Hope you are all well.

I have got 2 baby caiques (one blackheaded and one white belly). Both are around around 4 months old. Both doing great eating veg and pellets. I am still giving formula once a day. I was just curious as to how do i get them both to surf? At the moment i give them bathes and do provide towels but they sit there looking confused lol. Love all the videos i see of caiques surfing but my 2 do not do that at all.

Is this something they learn to do themselves over time?

Thanks

I dunno, I can’t get mine to stop!

Seriously, maybe they’re young yet.

Yes its a common beheaviour. They surf in the wild to dry themselves on leaves after a shower.

Only one of my eight doesnt surf on me ( and anything soft) and shes the wild one. She probably surfs when im not watching

Thanks did they pick it up them selves? Do you remember at what age they started to surf? And what type of towels do they like? Soft? Hard?

I wait for a warm day then spritz mine with a plant mister to simulate rain, calling "coolie coolie!". They come running when they hear that

The surfing starts when they're drying off in the sun. The habit then stays with any soft fabric, but the beheaviour is associated with pleasure too. Mine surf when they're happy, because they enjoy it.

If they're in their flight all day and I let them out to play, they will be surfing all over me

Just like us. the softer and warmer the better. Their body temperatures are so similar to human that you can keep an almost featherless baby caique alive and happy in your shirt pocket. I did pocket.jpg

Lol of course you must remember that your shirt pocket will never be the same again afterwards!. But I couldnt leave this baby at home in the incubator. She needed several feeds during the working day
