Hello,

I haven't posted in quite some time. Life has been busy to say the least.

But

About a month ago I took Charlie to the vet. And he was very sick with congestion, they told me he had lost quite a bit of weight but didnt specify how much, and they gave me pain medicine and antibiotics and rechecked him in three weeks. His congestion was better, but he had an arrhythmia and had lost another 30g. He has "old man veins" and they couldn't get blood to do blood work, but they got some for a blood smear and saw extremely high levels of platelets. That coupled with his recent attitude changes; not singing, letting people who wouldn't normally let near him pet him, climbing up on people who arent me, not wanting showers or in the bathroom (br are his crazy place), not walking about, and consistently getting under his cage or my bed. Things like that.

The vet said all that with his age (approx 40ish) means he is at his end of life. She said with the number of platelets and other symptoms he would have anywhere from next day to 4-6wks. That was about a week ago. I need to know when, if, or how, to tell if should let him go before . I dont want to at all but he seems miserable..

Here is what he does, or doesn't do now:

Only in cage to sleep, crawls out to floor as soon as I remove the cover.
Stays under cage or my bed mostly all day.
Doesn't preen anymore
Struggles to poop
Is soiled with poop from pooping where he stays standing (I try to keep him clean without stressing him too bad but its not enough)
Bobs head with breath
Allows others to pet/carry him
Weak, if any, grip. Sometimes has good grip, but now rarely.
Poor balance, trips a lot. Didn't used to trip at all.
Doesn't talk or sing anymore . Just grumps with moans and grumbles
On/off appetite. Sometimes seems excited for food but takes one bite and lays back down.
"Plops" on my chest. Gives up all effort to hold himself up and has almost rolled down to my lap.
Sleeps almost all of the time.
Feathers are fluffed a lot.
Doesn't play or chew (unless its a corn cob)
Audible digesting (his belly is grumbling a lot)
He's terrified of towels but let me wrap him after his last bath, he seemed extra cold or I wouldn't have bothered. He didnt care 1 single bit

Probably more but im in tears again so I will think more in a bit. He had a good day yesterday, he wanted to get out and about and even got back on my shoulder, fell all the way asleep ther which he has never done before. I love him. And dont want him to suffer more bc of me. The pic with the camouflage jacket shows how he has been spending his time with me. When I get him on my arm he just reaches for my chest then plops as soon as he's close enough.

What a sweetheart, poor baby. It sounds like he is really struggling. They really haven’t been able to identify a cause? Seems like a fairly quick decline.

I haven’t experienced such a situation myself, but I have heard people say that when there are more bad days than good days, it’s time to let them go. I would explore if there’s any treatment that can help him get more good days, and if not, then really think about what’s best for him.

Love to both you and Charlie. Give him some corn cob from me.

I have a picture somewhere of Secret from 1978 so she's at least that old.

Is there a stomach issue? Have you tried giving crumbles instead of full sized pellets so Charlie doesn't have to spend a lot of energy chewing?

I lost my amazon buddy, MC, to cancer and went through this awful decision. It's horribly hard and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Do you have a weight scale to weigh him yourself? I use a standard kitchen scale that weighs in grams and weigh first thing in the mornings before any food is given. That helps to give us some idea.

I give Secret senior nutriberries occasionally. I can always count on her eating almond slivers (baking aisle of grocery store -- no salt).

Prayers up that Charlie is just having a not so good few days.

I really feel for you. Regardless of what type of pet we own, your decision is a VERY hard one. We have gone thru what your going thru many times in the last 30 years with different pets. I will keep you in my thoughts that you will have the peace to know how to move forward.

They can't get enough blood to test and we are trying to balance stress and care as he wasn't handled much before coming to me about 2.5 years ago when my grandma went to a home.

Thank you so much, and I will!

I offer a variety of food an treats to him. He has been refusing most pellets and clumps, he has been eating mostly nuts and some of my foods (bfast sandwiches, oatmeal, noodles and the like) but he is still loosing weight. I use a kitchen scale in the morning on Grams. Today was 296...was really hoping it was up as he has seemed to be eating decently the last few days.

I appreciate the well wishes.
