Kashi sells a human grain mix that I use for the birds.
They recommend using 2x the water and simmering with the lid on for 25 min.
I would go with that and check the bite several times. My birds don't like mushy grains so I like them just on the firm side.

Could you spread some out on a GREY piece of paper and take a picture like that? I cook Barley/lentils/split peas for about 15 mins, adding them after the water comes to a boil and turning it down to med simmer....they still are cooked but firm....any water left over, I drain and add to the birdy bread...:hug8:

maybe use a piece of cardboard as the "background"? flash doesn't wash out on cardboard if its brown any way at least I haven't had any issue with it yet :)

First let me thank birdmarie for fixing this post!
ahha! Thanks! I will try again tonight on a piece of cardboard or grey paper.. im sure that most of you wouldn't have had that much trouble id-ing them.. The sad thing is is that my phone takes better pictures than my camera, but i don't want to send the millions of pictures as picture messages - even though i think it might be free, i don't remember and i don't want to risk it! -

I will try to get them up around 5 PST

Most grains should be cooked 2 parts water to 1 part grain, then simmer until all the water is absorbed. As for cooking time, it depends on the grain, they can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.

Guesses- number one is a pre packages mix from a local mom and pop bird store (i have those ingredients let me know if you want them) I also know the noodles lol - whole wheat elbow mac. rotini and orzo. i know there are 2 or 3 types of beans but don't know what kind, i know there is oatmeal and i think hulled buckwheat, and the very last picture is flax..

If you have any cooking reccomendations as well that would be awesome thanks!

Hmmm... #3 looks like wheat or oats or something?

#5- mung beans
#6- green split peas
#7- great northern beans?
#8- buckwheat
#9- chickpeas aka garbanzo beans

and in your second post:

#1- lentils
#2- again wheat, oats, or something LOL
#3- I can't really tell, but maybe quinoa? is it really tiny?
#4- same as 2, not sure
#5- adzuki beans, I think. how big are they?

K, those are my best guesses:)

thanks so much for your input - most of your guesses are what i was thinking along the lines of - as for #3 of post 2 - yes super tiny! i figured quinoa or millet maybe?? and as for the beans in the second post they are a little bigger than most kidney beans that i have seen - at least double the size of the little white (great northern?) beans
