This may sound real dumb to a lot of you but I have never seen a discussion on this topic. I had NO IDEA that so many birds actually do hold it until their owner gets home.

I don't even have my bird yet, but I was planning on potty training him/her...is this not a good idea? I don't want the poor birdy to get a bladder infection or something, having to hold it till I get home from work!

What are your thoughts on potty training?

Thank you so much for passing on those links. :o: very interesting, and it makes sense.

I have learned so much from all of you! My future birdy thanks you too!

I think this is kind of a bizarre situation...

And let me preface this by saying I have NEVER tried to potty train her and she DOES NOT and HAS NEVER gotten a reward for pooping.

...But for some reason, she won't poop while she's alone in the house. She saves it up and poops as soon as I get home. I have no idea why, and even less of an idea of how to get her to stop holding it. That can't be good for her. I have a fluctuating schedule, but for the moment I'm gone every day for about 2 or 3 hours most days, and around 8 hours twice a week. It's the longer days that worry me most. She's been doing this for longer than my current schedule, though.

Any ideas?
My Big Bird is the same way and always has been, in fact I had a thread about this same subject because I was worried about it. He has never been trained to poop on command either. He has not changed in the 2 years I have had him. He so far has been ok but I still worry about it! He will poop on me anytime!

Ceddy won't poop in her travel cage (when I take her out to the backyard for a couple of hours or so) and hold it until we get back in and I let her out and she never poops on me but fly away to one of "her" areas and she'll even refuse to step up if she has to 'go' first (Lucky me! :D). She has no qualms about pooping in her cage though.

I didn't train her to do that so my guess is they must have their own ideas of where they will or will not poop (unless they were potty trained, of course).
