How much is too much quinoa?

Patchy has always been a hard sell on veggies. If it's green, or even the hint of something mildly healthy he'll throw it on the ground and shriek at it. I'm just thankful he does eat his pellets. A couple days ago I tried giving him some of my quinoa.. and he LOVEDDD it. Now for the past 3 days I've been making quinoa with unsalted veggie broth, and I chop up a bunch of herbs (Dill, Parsley and Cilantro), sprinkle some lafberry multivitamin and he DEVOURS it. When I mean devour I mean I can give him a full bowl of quinoa and he'll just be going to TOWN on it for the next 30 mins, take a little water break and GO BACK. Last night I looked down at one of his food bowls and he legitimately ate almost all of it. I've never seen him eat this much before. In the mornings he comes in at 103, by the end of the night he's at a solid 107 or 108g. o_O While it gives me joy he has finally eaten a vegetable without it being in a muffin or birdie bread form...any side effects I should be aware of? Can he `overdose` on quinoa? Is it safe to give everyday?

I would look at the whole diet in to decide this. If it's making up 50% or more of the diet, I might be concerned.

Examples: if you give 1 tbsp of pellets and 1 tbsp of quinoa with veggies and that's what actually gets eaten, then it's probably fine.

If you give 1 tbsp of pellets and 2 tbsp of quinoa, then I would probably scale it back.

I think it is safe daily as long as you're mindful of portions

Secret loved the multi colored quinoa I bought at Trader Joe's. I gave her medicine in it for a while but I seem to recall a blood test came back that made me take the quinoa away. Of course, medicine is twice a day so it was probably just too much.

Baby food seems to be a better choice for that.

My birds love quinoa too. I give it to them every now and then in chop. I thought about giving it to them more often. Like everything, i researched it before doing so. Here is a link to some helpful info that you may or may not have known. It has to do with saponins. They are the reason behind rinsing quinoa before cooking.

Oh gosh. That's really good to know. I'll have to ween him off. He knows where I store the dried quinoa so his new favorite extracurricular activity is to fly to that shelf and start screaming incessantly.... :sad4:

I've tried babyfood with Patch but for whatever reason he's really into things that are shaped like small circular objects. Quinoa, Edamame beans, peas, split peas, lentils etc. when I gave babyfood to him he just spits it out and shakes his head. Idk. He's a weirdo.
