1. Step up (you offer your hand for them to step up)
D=almost always acceptable (will not get bit)
2. Head scratches
C=depends on luck
3. Pick up (you actively go and pick them up from a location)
D=almost always acceptable (will not get bit)
4. Foot touching
D=almost always acceptable (will not get bit) - but she might fly away
5. Beak touching (the beak and the nares)
C=depends on luck
6. Tail touching
A= no on all accounts
7. Wing check (do they let you spread their wings to check)
A= no on all accounts
8. Harness wearing (how open are they to wearing a harness)
Haven't even considered it, I can't imagine it would go well.
9. Flip over (will they let you flip them over actively, not the passive action of them flipping over)
C=depends on luck
10. Personal attention (Have your face less than 1cm to their beak for a period of time longer than 30s)
D=almost always acceptable (will not get bit)

My amazon is very different from one I had some decades ago. It is VERY difficult to get her to bite. She will act like she's going to, but never connects, at least not hard enough to hurt. Being restrained for something she may bite, but so far not hard enough to draw blood. I'm not sure how she was raised to be this mild mannered (at a pet store), it's a little scary to think.

On the other hand, the vast majority of the time she wants to be around me and interacting, but almost always resents me actually coming in contact, even to step up. I get a growl and a lunge like she's going to bite but never does, and for stepping up the lunge is almost simultaneous with raising a foot to step up. Weird.

This is so much like my amazon. They're really hilarious. Bea rarely bites. Effectively never. And if she does, it's light and brief. I got pinched a few weeks ago for trying to engage her in a head scratch when she was trying to fall asleep. Fair. Normally, however, she doesn't want to be aggressive.

But boy o boy, will she act like she's going to. I also get a lot of 'walking away from me while simultaneously wanting to go with me' behavior. They're so full of contractions.

Definitely! Merlin was literally begging to go to bed last night but when I asked him to step up he bit me. :roflmao:

I like to disrupt Bea's equilibrium and then 'save' her.

So she's begging to go to bed? I gently roll her perch a few feet (which she doesn't love), and then I rescue her from her new location by asking her to step up. Works like a charm!

Haven't looked at AA in a while and came back to new posts here XD.

So true though.

I do this to Puff as well except I flip her over when she is getting randomly horny for no good reason. She used to find it a shocker but now she is so used to it she is very ok with being flipped over though it still distracts her from whatever shenanigans she was up to prior so good enough LOL
