Well, 2 months later, I only managed to get him to eat millet from my hand. Still super affraid of everything and everyone :-\

Well that’s okay, it’s still progress! As time goes, so will the progress, especially if he will take treats from your hand.
Just remember to never force him to do anything!

I have had freckle almost 3 months and he is JUST starting to let me pet him and rub his neck. He stepped up from the start and has always like sitting on your arm or shoulder (got lucky there) but HATES hands. You could "pet" him with your nose and he is fine with it. Come near him with your hands and he runs. Couple days ago he just let me. He is out of his cage near me for most the day. Hasnt let anyone else pet him, and doesnt let me pet him all the time but it is definitely rewarding. Be patient.

Anyone have any suggestions for training birds to accepting hand petting?

How comfortable is he/she around hands in general? Many birds will never enjoy being petted.
