Lately I've been creating lot's of Toys at home. After making the toy, i put it into my birds cage. But my birds seem to not be interested in the Toys I've made but the instead go to the store-bought toys. Please suggest any ideas on how to get them engaged with the toy's I've made. If any details are required eg: what they like in toys, what i put into my toys. Please feel free to ask!

Are you using the same materials as the store bought toys have? That would be my first question. Each bird has different preferences.

If you have photos that would help!

I had a lot of trouble getting mine started, and found some just have no interest regardless, some delight her - not all will succeed.

Two things seem to help in my case:

1) if it's a toy in which you can hide treats, and let her SEE you hiding treats, I guarentee she will start tearing it up to get to them. The most successful one at that wasn't mine, but one made out of some heavy mesh/straw like stuff, but I've also just drilled holes in my wooden ones and shoved seeds in.

2) Mine LOVES the shredded paper, the little colorful crinkled strips. The best toy for her is to stuff a toilet paper role with it, hang it on a dowel or something (bottom closed) and let her tear it up. It lasts about 10 minutes though. First few times I put seeds in it, but found it's all about the paper. So if I have a toy I want to draw attention to I wrap and weave paper into it. Doesn't always work, but sometimes. She finds any sight of paper to pull out irresistible.

And sometimes just randomly a toy that's been sitting there two weeks untouched draws attention and gets destroyed. Who knows what triggers it?

Anything I made with Sola or Balsa is also immediately destroyed. Not good toys (from my perspective), because they are gone too quickly, but also worth a try. Maybe mix the soft stuff with something more durable.

I've found zero difference whether I dye the wood by the way. It's more interesting to the humans, but she doesn't seem to care.

Can you share pics of your home made toys and the sort you bought from the store that your bird liked. It might just be a matter or placement, size, materials etc but without seeing what you are working with it’s hard to help
