How dangerous is salt?

Hi! I went to a pet store recently and picked up some dried peas, when I was checking out I realized they had salt granules in the bag. I’ve read salt isn’t a necessary additive if they have a proper diet and can be easily overdosed, but when asking the man at the counter he assured me salt is necessary to give them and so the peas would be fine. So my question is: should I be feeding my birds any type of salt? My better judgement says no, but I want to check :D

Trace amounts of salt are needed by the body. However, I wouldn't offer salted things. If eating pellets and/or veggies, they are likely getting enough sodium in their diet to not need any additional supplement.
