Hello.

This propensity in cockatiels for unwanted egg laying, how common is that?

Is it 2%, 5%, 20%, 50%?

Do budgies do it too?

Depends on a lot of factors.

Is it a mated pair? Are they being stimulated in other ways such as inappropriate touching, access to nesting areas, soft warm foods, long days, etc?

I don't know if anyone has the exact information you're looking for.

It can happen to any species of parrot. Budgies and cockatiels are probably more prone to it since they have been bred in captivity the longest, and large breeding operations are likely to keep their most prolific (in terms of egg quantity and frequency) breeders active. So we're probably breeding this trait into them sadly.

Cockatiels are more likely than other species to be chronic egg layers. However, most females are not chronic egg layers? Does that make sense?

Yeah, that probably explains it. That is sad.
Have a fine day.
