the pets I had throughout my life were 8 fish of 3 different species and 2 cockatiels. Therefore cockatiels are the only bird spieces I have experience caring for. We don't have any pets currently but my parents said we can have 1-2 birbs again. I have been thinking about birbs who aren't parrots, like maybe a canary or 2 doves or quail.

1. are pigeons also doves?
2. Is rock dove another name for rock pigeon?
3. some differences between quail care and parrot care
4. Differences between dove and pigeon care
5. Do pigeons and dove or quails ever need their nails to be cut?

@AussieBird and @Patioquail have quail. They will likely know more about nail care.

Any difference in care would depend on species. not whether the bird is a pigeon or a dove.
To add on to Tkas post, remember that some doves are very small, and pigeons can be quite large. Just something else to consider.

It depends on the environment some people have aviary’s with rocks and what not and the nails file down naturally and I keep mine in a cage so it takes some time if they were to file down I have trimmed mine once but other then that no sometimes they might need their beaks trimmed as well it all depends on your bird and what you see with it.

It also depends on what species of quail your looking into getting.

Alot I'd say. Quail are quite different birds. Depending on the species, they don't fly, they're ground birds. So cage wise you need lots of floor space. They're generally pretty nervous and needs lots of hidey spaces to feel safe.
They're also pretty territorial and aggressive. Always get the correct gender ratio for your species.
If you want "tame" ones you need to pick species wisely and generally need to raise them from babies. They need to be fed a properly formulated gamebird feed suitable for their age.

Sometimes. What Pat said above, it depends on you setup. I've never done mine, but my species likes to use perches and that probably helps wear them down.
