Hi everyone! :) I just thought of joining here because recently I got a parakeet/budgie (not sure what the difference is) and I’m learning about them because I want to be a good parent to my bird.

This is actually my first time having a bird and I feel like there’s so much to learn.

I have a few questions which I will be posting later on!

Welcome! Technically, the name parakeet applies to several types of small parrots that have long tails. The budgerigar or budgie like you have is one of them, and so is Ralph, pictured at left. He's a monk parakeet, also called a Quaker parrot. In North America it's been common practice for a long time to call budgies parakeets, so either one is right for your feathered friend. :)

parakeet/budgie (not sure what the difference is)
All budgies are parakeets, but not all parakeets are budgies.

the name parakeet applies to several types of small parrots that have long tails
This is definitely the easiest way to understand it :)

In North America it's been common practice for a long time to call budgies parakeets
Here in Spain they call them ¨Periquito¨ which translates literally to ¨parakeet¨.
