I am so happy to announce the arrival my latest little one. Yes, she is my biological child
. Sorry to sound so giddy, but I have sure missed having a pionus. It's rare for me to post, but I realized I really should. Here's the birthday post I made for my Zon on the Amazon Board:
Today I realized that Principessa, aka Murderbird, has been with me 22 years. She hatched in May 2003 and I got her that October. I think she is actually a he, but she doesn't correct me on that.
Two weeks ago I asked her why she doesn't talk very much these days and to please talk more to me like she used to. The next day she started up again. Maybe by now I just know what she needs and she doesn't have to say much. In the morning I ask if she wants apples or snap peas, frozen veg or grapes, and when she makes an "Ah" noise, I fix it. I ask if she wants birdies or music on Youtube, and whichever gets the "Ah" is what we listen to. Sometimes she says "Outbird" or "Waterbird". We used to have a much more active life, though. She used to kayak and ride the bike to my classroom with me if all the kids passed their tests. She watched traffic and neighbors and we had several other birds.
A week ago a friend who works at the SPCA called to ask if I still liked "that strange little species", meaning pionus, because she got one in. I said yes, and I would like a meet and greet with Pessa, but no big vet bills please. Pessa has been lonely, I know.
About 8 years ago Dartman helped me out when our last boy pionus was too much for me alone and I couldn't manage him or the cost of my dogs and birds. The dogs and Dobby were rehomed and it has been very difficult without them. However, they all went to people who could manage them. I was way, way over scheduled and overworked up until this year. Now that old job died on me, haha, and things are more settled.
Principessa has seemed bored even though I make lots of toys and try to take her out when I get groceries. So, we did a meet and greet with Missy, whose owner passed away. She has some breathing issues from secondhand smoke and wants only human food. Lost her mind when she saw a pizza box, and next flew over to my stir fry like it was her own. Pessa really seems to like her but is taunting her like she used to taunt Dobby, our first Pi. I ask her if Missy is a good little bird and she says, "Little bird, eee eee eeeee!" That's what she used to say when Dobby was a baby. It's hard to express how much I have missed Dob but am eternally grateful to Terry and his sister, Sandy, for taking him. Now Missy kind of fills that space a little. She doesn't have half the spunky mischief that Dob has, but she sure knows her way around the human food. So far she doesn't venture out of her cage except for my food, but she is interested in everything. The first week I kept her out of view but close where she could hear Pessa. She seemed pretty depressed. i guess her owner passed away from smoking and the son's only request was a non smoking home where she could get in a sunny window. She likes her cage, it seems. Pessa wants to be near her, so that's good. This week they are watching each other and Pessa is showing off, flipping upside down and stretching her wings.
So now Pessa is talking again and it's the Amazon Mumble
Missy doesn't talk much but I am sure she will have some things to say. I love, love, love Pessa and have to shake my head when I think of all we have been through together. Missy has stolen my heart and I look forward to many adventures with her. I just had to post here and on the Pi board, too!
