I've had my Red Bellied out all day at the office. She recently went on a big flying spree and got panicky (she is not in good shape as her feathers flight feathers are just growing out from being clipped). I got her back to her cage and she is acting very lethargic. Breathing hard and eyes closed. When I try to mess with her she wakes up and gets sassy (sassy is normal for her).

Is it possible she just tired herself out? It's too late to get to a vet. Any advice on what I should do?

Thank you,

jaime

From your description, it sounds like the bird is tired from activities today and wants to rest. Make sure your bird has fresh water and a snack. If you have children's non-flavored pedielyte or gatorade you can mix them 50/50 with water. The electrolytes in the drinks will help your bird with hydration.

Keep an eye on your bird for good measure and always have a vet's emergency number on hand.

Thanks everyone. I'm on hold with the vet. She is not injured and has been fine all day. But after the crazy flight she was panting and almost immediately after getting back to her perch closed her eyes while still panting. I still have not gotten through to the actual "bird vet"

How is she now? Is she used to flying? Is she tail bobbing?

If her flying was erratic as you say she may have pulled one of her chest muscles. You say she has not done much flying lately? If her feathers are also at an inbetween stage it will have put more of a strain on her flight and now she is paying for it. Good luck.
