One of my cockatiel has an eye problem. It started around march 4th. At the begining, there was some wet discharge from the right eye. I believe its itching cause she scratch a lot. I went to the vet, they give me 2 eye drops. One of which seems to be anti biotic. Since the situation doesnt improve, i use boric acid to clean the skin around the eye, i saw one person does on youtube. In the meantime, there is some sort of tumor growing just the front of the right eye. I went to anothe vet last week, the vet prescribed an antibiotic powder which i feed her 1ml each day for 7 days. But her condition doesnt seem to improve. She is eating quite well, not as much as she used to before but, she is eating. But she is weak. Whenever i wrap her in a cloth to give her medication, afyer i release her, she cant wlk properly, as if she is having some dizziness. Her feather around her eye is all gone. I put e-collar to prevent her from scratching. Even her poop os different, because i have another cockatiel, they eat the same food, but their stool is different. While one is healthy white with water, the other is dark green or darky sometimea. And her eye, the tumor grwoing so fast that her eyeball can be barely seen. I have contacted all known vets here but to be honest, i cant rely fully on them. Does anyone have some experience about this condition? I neep your help

@Thuneia Your baby's eye certainly looks serious. How long has she been on the second antibiotic? What did the vets tell you about her condition?

What tests have the vets performed? Have they done a swab and gram stain? Have they done a culture and sensitivity? After the treatment your bird has received the testing needs to be expanded and I would even insist on a biopsy and histology.

Can you please tell us what country you live in.

Ugh... that poor tiel! :( I can't tell if it's a tumor or an infection. It doesn't sound like the medications are helping and I don't know that boric acid is actually safe to use on parrots.

Please keep trying to reach out to various vets to find one that can better help you in some way.

I could not find any information on the safety of boric acid for a bird's eye on the internet.

Yesterday was the 7th day. Since she is acting weak, maybe the medicine effect, i stop giving her from today. One doctor i contacted said 7 days could be enough. They do not perform any test!! The 1st vet didnt even touch her, she just look into her cage and give a prescription! Thats why i went to another vet. There, its a bit different but he doesnt perform any test again. Im really not trusting our vets here.... Ill be honest. It seems like they do not know much about it. Urghh

I found two or three videos where they clean with boric acid. But their tiels have conjuncvetitis(?) Didnt know the correct name. It healed rapidly. But i have done that only 4 times.

@Thuneia In your country can you purchase drugs without a prescription? It is a good pain reliever and anti-inflammatory - not a medication that will cure anything. If so at the very least I recommend that you buy some Meloxicam (metacam, Mobic, Vivlodex, brand names) in the liquid form if possible. If you can't buy without a prescription try to get one of the vets you have gone to to prescribe for you. You will need a scale to weigh your bird, since dosage is calculated based on the weight of the patient.

The dosage for birds is 0.2mg/kg. Please come back and let us check your dosage calculations before giving. An over dose can be dangerous.

I'm really sorry that your tiel is so sick. I agree with the others that you need a better vet.

My advice would be to contact an avian vet specialist and see if they can advise you. I had a look for Indian members of the Association of Avian Vets (Member Search Results - Association of Avian Veterinarians). From a very, very brief skim, Dr Palanivelrajan Muthusami works at Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and may be able to put you in contact with an avian vet closer to you. A colleague of his, Dr A Prathipa, seems to have done some work on parrots., I've linked to both of their profiles below.
Dr Palanivelrajan Muthusami Welcome to TAMILNADU VETERINARY & ANIMAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITY(TANUVAS)
Dr A Prathipa: Welcome to TAMILNADU VETERINARY & ANIMAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITY(TANUVAS)

You could also try contacting the zoology departments at Mizoram University, NEHU and Guahati University and see if they know anyone who is closer to you.
Mizoram University Zoology department: Department of Zoology
North-Eastern Hill University Zoology department: North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong ::Departments Zoology Department
Guahati University Zoology department: https://www.gauhati.ac.in/science/zoology

My family is from Meghalaya so I know what you're up against. I worry every time their dogs are sick because getting decent veterinary care is near impossible.

I am sorry that your little one is unwell. I agree with others about seeking out a different vet. That looks very uncomfortable and painful and it seems the current treatment isn't working. Good luck and pleasee keep us posted.

Guys, thank you so much for your support and suggestions.
I contacted another vet, i made an appointment, we will see him tomorrow :) i hope it works. Please do pray for my little tiel.
Btw, this morning, she was chirping more energetic than before..i was so happy. I let her out of the cage the whole day. I gave her corn, millets and ORS solution. She is eating corn continuously. Atleast seeing her eating well somehow makes me happy. Now she is sleeping peacefully in her cage. Ill keep updating

Update - we went to the vet today. Thr vet pulled out a lot of solid white feases. As you can see, her eye is also more visible now. We have to go again after 3 days for dressing. I think this is working.... She is also quite playful.
But as you can see, her eye seems white, i dunno if her sight is damaged, but i hope this also will heal soon.
