Hurricane Beryl has left us without power. The weather alerts say the temperature will be up to 105 today. I have no generator therefor no electricity and no fans. How can I keep my two budgies alive? Is it better to move them out of the house and keep them in whatever shade I can find? Would a closet be a good idea? I do not have another place I can take them. Please help!

Hello Melissa,
Is there anyone nearby with power? Hotel / hostel / friends or family homes?
Maybe try converting your house into a cave; covering all of the windows from the outside, though it would only work if the house is not insulated.
Be sure to give them bowls of water to bathe in.

move them out of the house and keep them in whatever shade I can find?
If you have a large tree surrounded by grass and other foliage it could be cool enough unless you have (terral) - I don't know the English word for it, when the winds come in hot in the summer like an open oven.

Would a closet be a good idea?
No because it is a small space.

I found an old thread of mine, might be worth a read if there's any tips you could do;

Any way you can get a generator for some power?

Although I wasn't without power, I once had my birds outside on a very hot day because my HVAC system was being replaced. I was in the shade on a screened porch, and I would mist the birds every 30 minutes or so for evaporative cooling. Luckily there was a bit of a breeze, too.

Under the biggest tree you have available will likely be the coolest spot because trees create a cooling up breeze. Proving water to bath and misting will help as well. A breeze will help. Is it possible that you could use a vehicle with the air conditioning to cool them in short spurts (like 5-10 minutes every hour or so during the hottest part of the day. ) Also you may check with some of the bird vets as they sometimes are put on priority for bringing back the electricity and maybe they will board your bird. Other than that I would think about evacuating your bird if at all possible . There may be some evacuation shelters that will allow you to bring your bird. Maybe take the bird over for the day and come back home for the evening when it is cooler. You are in a tough spot and just have to do the best you can in very difficult circumstances.

Place them where they get the best of any breeze and of course keep them shaded and hopefully quiet and calm. Under trees and bushes is often lovely and cool and where wild birds will go to cool off some.

If you can get your hands on an esky/icebox and some ice you can replace cool water for them to drink bathe in or sit near- Frozen bottles of water are wonderful or ice packs assuming you can get to a place that sells ice.

I would also make up some electrolyte and offer them a bowl with that and a bowl with plain water. A homemade electrolyte mixture can be made using 1 cup water, 2 teaspoons sugar, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon baking powder.

How's it going? What did you end up doing and how are the birds?
